Short Story: The Lonely Clock

I learned about the story of the artisan who created a lonely clock from the 1995 Studio Ghibli film ‘Whisper of the Heart.’ The fairy tale within the tale for me had a deep sense of longing and sadness because it really feels so real. This is the thing about Hayao Miyazaki films. He made every movie so close to the heart that the viewers are able to attach themselves with the story.

There are only a few who’ve heard about this tale so I might as well retell it. In the animated movie, the story was introduced to Shizuku by the old man who owned the antique shop. As he was trying to fix the grand mother clock, he recited the probable tale of the artisan who made it, that he had lost the love of his life.

I actually don’t know the title of this short story. What’s written below are not mine albeit this is only from what I have understood.

The Tale Of The Lonely Clock

The King of the Dwarves who lived underground met a Fairy from above.
As if heaven and earth they stood apart.
But still they continue to fall in love.
She is cursed to live as a sheep.
Only when the clock strikes 12 is she a fairy when all is asleep.
She knows she has nothing to bid.
So the king appears at that moment just to watch a glimpse of the girl he fell in love with.
